I have been part of My Brother’s Keeper (MBK), first as a mentor and then serving as president. MBK’s main program focuses on working with 50 mentees (6th-8th grade) weekly from a city school to help model successful behavior and habits and to talk to them about their future. It is very important for young minority kids to see other kids of color who are successful and goal-oriented. I have always told them that it doesn't hurt to have a Plan B if the NFL or NBA doesn't happen. Why not do both?
Through MBK, I worked directly with the principal to create several successful fundraisers. One, in particular, was introducing Friday Breakfast, where we worked with restaurants to provide breakfast items we sold for a profit. All proceeds fund field trips with the mentees. The Friday breakfast was also helpful for students who didn't usually eat breakfast and a great reason to get to school on time! One of the most memorable moments for our MBK team was representing St. Charles at the most prominent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Breakfast, where we met the mayor and other leaders in Columbus, Ohio.
Another initiative I worked on is the Ladder Program. This was an initiative to connect students of color to help foster mentorship and fellowship. The hope is to build a stronger community to help attract and, more importantly, retain more students of color at St. Charles. The St. Charles' education and brotherhood then became even more inclusive and robust through reflecting our city’s diverse population. Through having the honor to lead and represent this program I learned important organizational skills. I never believed before that I could be a leader, and while I understood becoming a physician came with a guiding role, it wasn't until my experience with My Brothers' Keeper that I understood my full potential and capabilities to help others.
