LA Recap
As a Biology Learning Assistant, I wasn’t just helping students survive the Krebs cycle; I was helping them build confidence in their ability to learn, question, and engage with the world scientifically. Sure, I explained enzymes and mitosis more times than I can count, but the real heart of my role was creating an environment where students felt safe to say, “I don’t get it,” and trust that they’d be met with support, not judgment. This is something I wish I had when I was struggling through Biology 1.
That’s where the Global Citizen Scholar piece clicked for me. Teaching can be a human act where it requires empathy, adaptability, and cultural awareness especially in a room full of students with different backgrounds, perspectives, and learning styles. As a Learning Assistant, I learned to listen deeply, communicate clearly, and respect that every student brings their own lens to science. I wasn’t just helping them memorize content; I was helping them engage critically with how biology affects their communities, their health, and their world.
To me, being a Global Citizen Scholar means using knowledge to uplift others, not just yourself. It means viewing education as a shared experience, where collaboration fuels progress and where you can be that push to create something so beautiful.
Also, I now flinch every time someone says “glycolysis.” Please keep me in your thoughts as I dream about the cycle in my sleep.
I was too busy helping first-year students in class, so below is the only picture of me actually helping facilitate the class.
